<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-iqGW84JzcYw/WDONe62PVGI/AAAAAAAA6ls/wqlENDmwv5EP1tirUT4KWCnyPyw1oih2ACLcB/s1600/%2523feministselfie.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="244" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-iqGW84JzcYw/WDONe62PVGI/AAAAAAAA6ls/wqlENDmwv5EP1tirUT4KWCnyPyw1oih2ACLcB/s640/%2523feministselfie.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
Three years ago <a href="https://twitter.com/thewayoftheid/status/403586179259322368" target="_blank">two feminists tweeted out #FeministSelfie</a> in the face of a condescending article attempting to label all selfies as anti-feminist and a cry for help.<br />
<br />
Since then countless feminists have used the hashtag, or others it inspired including <a href="http://365feministselfie.com/" target="_blank">#365FeministSelfie</a>,
#366FeministSelfie (leap year!), and #365FeministLife, to showcase
their daily feminist actions whether it is escorting at a clinic,
painting a son's fingernails, or exhibiting our bikini bodies from sizes
zero to 32. Most days our #FeministSelfie is just the ordinary day of
someone who claims the label of feminist. For us a selfie is
revolutionary in a society that still worships and values young thin
white bodies. It is revolutionary to share one's journey as a
transgender person in a world where using a public restroom is a battle.
It is radical, not narcissistic, to want to share our selfie that shows
our "flaws" and scars. It is radical to show pride in our family
composition. It is community building to selfie with our "I Voted!"
stickers.<br />
<br />
Many hashtags are born of snark and
frustration. #FeministSelfie was no different. Yet it endures in many
forms to connect those of us in the feminist struggle.<br />
<br />
Normally
I write a next year post in December, but the anniversary/birthday of
the #FeministSelfie hashtag just two weeks after the election of a
racist misogynist con man seemed like a good time to make a statement.
As we plan to enter 2017 with the knowledge that we need each other more
than ever, #365FeministSelfie will be here to help.<br />
<br />
#365FeministSelfie
will continue on through 2017 and I believe through out the entire
Trump-Pence regime. The hashtag will continue to connect us. The
challenge will hopefully remind us to do something feminist every day.
It will also signal to others that feminists are indeed everywhere. From
our college campuses to our baristas. Feminists come in all shapes,
shades, sizes and backgrounds.<br />
<br />
I also hope the hashtag
will challenge us to strengthen our feminism. Maybe we are big city
feminists who need to learn from rural feminists - at the same time
lessen them from the isolation I often hear about from rural friends.
White feminists who want to learn how to make their feminism more
intersectional can listen to feminists of color who often speak volumes
in their selfies.<br />
<br />
I know a selfie can't solve all our
problems, but I do have hope that the community we continue to build
through the hashtag will sustain us in the dark times and inspire us to
keep fighting.<br />
<br />
If you have ideas on how we can use the hashtag for education and resistance please leave a comment or connect with me over at <a href="https://www.facebook.com/vivalafeminista" target="_blank">Facebook</a>, <a href="https://twitter.com/veronicaeye" target="_blank">Twitter</a> or <a href="http://instagram.com/veronicaeye" target="_blank">Instagram</a>. I plan to set out our 2017 in coming days. Until then...<br />

<b>How long have you been participating in #365FeministSelfie? </b><br />
I am pretty sure I've been following since the beginning! Or something close to that.<br />
<br />
<b>Why did you join the project? </b><br />
I joined it because I loved the idea of producing my own media as an act of resistance to the underrepresentation of Black women in mainstream media. It felt like a great self-affirming way to do a "snap back" to racist norms that deem "unattractive."
I also was terrible at taking selfies and I knew that I needed to practice more if I want to get any better. I must admit I am way better at taking them now.<br />
<br />
<b>What has been the best/most interesting part of the project for
you? Have you learned something about yourself? Met a new BFF? </b><br />
The project has helped me become more comfortable with how I look in photos. Before the project, I always kind of hated how I looked in photographs and often avoided participating in photos. But as I posted more selfies I got more comfortable with seeing how I look. I have learned that I like to be in control - and that I think I have a pretty darn cute face.<br />
<br />
<b>How many pictures do you snap for each selfie you share? </b><br />
It all depends. I don't post every day anymore. I have shifted to mostly doing selfies on significant days or in significant locations. So sometimes I might have one. Other times I may have taken a lot so I can see which looks best.<br />
<br />
<b>Have you ever received any negative comments for being in the project? </b><br />
No I haven't, actually! If anyone has said anything then I must have missed it (thankfully)!<br />
<br />
<b>How do you do feminism? </b><br />
I do feminism by making the belief that everyone deserve equity my own. I do my best in my even seemingly mundane actions to promote a more just world — that could go from taking selfies every day to speaking publicly about sexual violence to helping a young woman to negotiate for a higher salary.<br />

<b>How long have you been participating in #365FeministSelfie? </b><br />
I started at the beginning but only got a few months in before my stamina petered out. Then, in 2015, I decided to start back up when 2016 rolled around.<br />
<br />
<b>Why did you join the project?
</b><br />
Last year, I was diagnosed with a life threatening pregnancy condition called placenta percreta. I almost died. After surviving, I realized there was so much MORE I wanted to do and become. I decided to rejoin 365FS in 2016 with a few goals in mind. First, to focus on my selfcare more. I survived something scary, time to take care of the body that did it. Also, to take time each day to document me, in a moment, good or bad. Just <b>BE</b> in a moment, with myself. So often as women, we don't take time for us and I think that it's incredibly important to do so. And, yes, put it on social media, tell the world, <b>I AM HERE SEE ME.</b><br />
<br />
<b>What has been the best/most interesting part of the project for
you? Have you learned something about yourself? Met a new BFF?</b><br />
I have met a few amazing women. I see their strength and courage and it inspires me! I have learned that it doesn't matter if I don't have makeup on or my hair is a mess or if my teeth are crooked, this is me and the population can take it or leave it. I will still be here.<br />
<br />
<b>How many pictures do you snap for each selfie you share?</b><br />
I have a best of three rule.<br />
<br />
<b>Have you ever received any negative comments for being in the project? </b><br />
I have been told that I take "too many selfies" and that "every picture looks the same" and to that I say, have your opinion, my 365FS isn't really for anyone but me. I have received a few negative comments on my breastfeeding pictures and a few lewd ones as well but I think that's more about the breastfeeding and less about the #365feministselfie tag.<br />
<br />
<b>How do you do feminism? </b><br />
I live each day as myself. I call people out when they need to be called out. I educate as often as I can. I teach my kids about consent, body autonomy, equality, etc. I say what I want, when I want. I wear what I want, where I want. I live my authentic self, that's how I do feminism.<br />

<b>How long have you been participating in #365FeministSelfie?</b> <br />
I first did the #365feministselfie project in 2014 and thoroughly enjoyed it. I decided to not participate in 2015, but missed it so much, so I'm back for 2016 and happy to be doing this project.<br />
<br />
<b>Why did you join the project? </b> <br />
I've always been fond of selfies and I've received a significant amount of criticism for it, especially from males who have been in my life. I have been called "vain" and "self-absorbed" all because I often appreciate the way I look and want to share that with the world. I don't quite know how I stumbled upon this hashtag on instagram, but I do remember <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/i6up6UKXBp/" target="_blank">my first #365feministselfie caption read "This is what a feminist looks like."</a><br />
<br />
<b>What has been the best/most interesting part of the project for you? Have you learned something about yourself? Met a new BFF? </b> <br />
I've come to realize that a lot of what the #365feministselfie is is part of practicing radical self-acceptance. I am not here to please others. This project has also served as a platform to share my experiences with sexual assault and mental illness. The #365feministselfie community has rallied behind me and I do not know what I'd do without their support. Within this group of people I feel safe, unjudged, and I get to be unapologetically me. A selfie a day is really more than it seems.<br />
<br />
<b>How many pictures do you snap for each selfie you share? </b> <br />
I typically snap a couple of photos for each selfie, but I have been trying to practice only taking one photo and posting that one since it shows a more accurate representation of me.<br />
<br />
<b>Have you ever received any negative comments for being in the project? </b> <br />
I've not received much criticism for this project. Of course, there are people who still claim I'm just obsessed with my looks, but I'm learning to ignore them. This isn't about them. It's about me and celebrating who I am with other like-minded people.<br />
<br />
<b>How do you do feminism? </b> <br />
How do I do feminism? That's a tough question. I believe in intersectional feminism and that feminism is not about equality, but equity. I practice feminism by being an advocate for victim-survivors of sexual violence. I am rally behind causes of reproductive freedom, LGBTQA safety and community progress, equal pay for equal work, Black Lives Matter... The list could go on. I think, most importantly, I do feminism by attempting to create pathways for other narratives to be heard other than my own. I don't know everything and I don't pretend to understand oppressions that are not my own.<br />

<b>How long have you been participating in #365FeministSelfie?</b><br />
This is my third year of the project.<br />
<br />
<b>Why did you join the project? </b><br />
I joined because I wasn't comfortable with myself. I hated looking at pictures of me and I wanted to change that. <br />
<br />
<b>What has been the best/most interesting part of the project for you? Have you learned something about yourself? Met a new BFF? </b><br />
I love that the #365FeministSelfie has connected me with other
chronically ill people. Being sick is a huge chunk of my life and now
there's a community where I feel less alone about it. I also like seeing
the variety of selfies in my feed. #365FeministSelfie truly shows how many amazing women, of all sorts, exist.
<br />
<br />
<b>How many pictures do you snap for each selfie you share? </b><br />
Not many. It's probably around three, unless I want to make sure my
outfit or costume is being perfectly displayed. Then it takes a while.<br />
<br />
<b>Have you ever received any negative comments for being in the project? </b><br />
Surprisingly, no. I've had nothing but support.<br />
<br />
<b>How do you do feminism? </b><br />
My feminism is intersectional and all-encompassing. I care about all the marginalized women who are seldom heard in the media. This project has actually made me investigate and be more critical of how we're treated. We deserve better than this.<br />

This is one New Year's Resolution I failed to keep last year...Highlighting some #365Feministselfie pics. Maybe this year I'll work on a weekly highlight instead of every day? Seems more manageable right? So let's get to it:<br />

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UTgrK7Jcy2s/VocJb9gNleI/AAAAAAAA5L0/M1JkxrTXuBQ/s1600/in%2B2016.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UTgrK7Jcy2s/VocJb9gNleI/AAAAAAAA5L0/M1JkxrTXuBQ/s640/in%2B2016.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Yup...we are doing this thing again!<br />
<br />
But I want to share a new spin on the photo challenge. One selfieist on Instagram thought up <a href="https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/365feministlife/" target="_blank">#365FeministLife</a> to use this year. From what I can tell selfies are definitely cool for the challenge, but the life part of the hashtag allows you to NOT selfie on some or most days, but to show the world how you live a feminist life. HOW COOL IS THAT?! I am looking forward to a lot of every day feminist life photos. <br />
<br />
Also be sure to keep an eye on #366FeministSelfie as it is a leap year. Some of us will also be using #365FeministSelfieLeapDay on February 29th.<br />
<br />
In other words, because it's a leap year, it might be a hot mess around the hashtag! But as always it will be a lot of fun and discovery.<br />
<br />
I hope you will (continue to) join us for another year of awesome. <br />
I can't believe it has been two weeks since Blogher 2015! I still feel like I am catching my breath. But I owe you all a short update:<br />
<ul>
<li>Friday's keynote was amazing! I was super nervous, but once I got up on stage talking about this project I was good to go. I did go off script so I failed to mention a few things I did want to say. Especially about how the people who have been most active in #365FeministSelfie are not famous feminists. The hashtag is often their refuge in a world where being a feminist can feel lonely if you do not have a local feminist gang to support you. </li>
<li>While I felt like everywhere I went people were telling me how amazing the project sounded, two people stood out among the well wishers. Marian came to find me once my 10x10 was over and I sat down for lunch. She has <a href="http://countdownto70.com/" target="_blank">a blog to countdown to her 70th birthday</a>. Marian told me that she recently realized how few pictures she had of her life, but would start to use selfies to leave some great pics behind for her children & grandchildren. Then there was Lorne who runs <a href="http://www.raisingsienna.com/" target="_blank"><i>Raising Sienna</i></a>, his blog about being a dad with depression. He wrote me a note that said he wanted to take a lot of what I had said in my talk home to his daughter for future use. Lorne, as many men have & still do, struggles with his own body image and thinks that incorporating more selfies into his routine with his daughter will benefit both of them. </li>
<li> #365FeministSelfie was mentioned in a few Blogher 2015 round up posts! Thanks to <a href="http://bellanyc.com/behindtheropes-bella-new-york-at-blogher15/voty-selfie365/" target="_blank">Bella</a> & to Blogher founder, <a href="https://medium.com/@jorydj/my-own-private-blog-movement-3c80cdd36ce1" target="_blank">Jory Des Jardins</a>.</li>
<li>November Retreat: We are still working on all the fine details, but we do plan to hold a retreat in Columbus, Ohio the weekend of November 6th. </li>
<ul>
<li>The Portland retreat's schedule was Friday dinner (optional), Saturday all day programming, Sunday morning programming. I hope to stick to that formula. </li>
</ul>
<li>AUCTION!! We are putting together an auction that should launch in the next few weeks to help cover the expenses of the retreat. The Portland retreat raised enough money that it was a no cost (but bare bones) retreat. </li>
</ul>
I have a lot to still dig out from due to Blogher, so thanks for being patient!<br />

And in the spirit of a colleague of mine in the human rights world,
perhaps your hero is actually a group of people working collectively? Looking forward to learning who is your hero. <br />

Here’s my recap of our first 365 Feminist Conference.
Veronica wrote one too but I am so happy with how it turned out, I wanted to
document my experience!</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I flew into Portland on Friday evening. The lovely Sarah
picked me up from the airport, along with her girls, which was a great welcome.
<span style="font-family: Wingdings; mso-ascii-font-family: Calibri; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-char-type: symbol; mso-hansi-font-family: Calibri; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-symbol-font-family: Wingdings;"><span style="mso-char-type: symbol; mso-symbol-font-family: Wingdings;">J</span></span> I checked into the
hotel; they had free cookies at the front desk. Free. Cookies. It was not the
fanciest hotel but how bad could it be? It was clean, cozy, and did I mention
the free cookies?</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Those of us who were in town early enough met at Alberta
Street Pub for dinner. It was maybe about half of our group of attendees. Food
and beer were had, and so much great conversation. And hugs! Then back to the
hotel for more conversation, with even more of our sisters as they came into
town and checked in. We hung out in one of the lounge areas until midnight or
so, chatting away. I was completely exhausted but still after I went to bed, Alison
and I stayed up for at least another hour talking in the dark. Did I mention my
three very closest friends attended this conference, and I roomed with one of
them? Destined to be a fab weekend.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Saturday morning, I got up early enough to ensure the hotel
would have our meeting room ready by 9. Ate some free breakfast, and went into
the meeting room to set up. I made conference programs and also bookmarks as
keepsakes, with all of the attendees photos (selfies of course!) included, so I
set all of those out as the hotel staff brought in our coffee and tea service.
The first hour was our meet and greet time; we said hello and exchanged lots
more hugs to the ladies who had checked in super late and we hadn’t seen the
night before. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
At 10, we sat down with our first speaker of the day,
Caitlin from In Our Words, a Portland bookstore and feminist community center.
Caitlin spoke about running a feminist non-profit and the history of her
organization, but for the main discussion she chose the topic of self care.
True to form, we all opened up and had an amazing, intimate discussion on this
topic. Given how our online group operates, I shouldn’t have been surprised,
but truly everyone showed up and shared and listened and supported and
encouraged. We cried and laughed and I personally deeply enjoyed experiencing
the dynamic of our amazing online community in live action.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Our next speaker was group member Iaia, who studied
international relations and diplomacy. Her topic was “Feminism in International
Relations.” She spoke passionately about her own history and awakening to
feminism, her education, and her drive toward diplomacy as her calling. She
shared with us stories of specific women and communities around the world and
why feminism is important to them, what rights they are fighting for and need
us as more privileged feminists to help them fight for. I so appreciated the
energy and visible passion she shared with us – very inspiring!</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Next we went for lunch. That sounds so simple, but I admit I
learned the hard way how difficult it is to get 16 people out the door and to
the same restaurant within a reasonable time frame. LOL. That was my mistake in
planning, but eventually we ended up at Vita on Alberta Street, which served a
good variety of food including tons of vegan options. It was DELICIOUS. I
enjoyed my lunch, and tasted several sisters’ lunches too. ;)</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
We were a bit late getting back to the hotel; fortunately
our next presenter is a 365 member and was so very understanding and kind.
Arwyn (LMT) led us in an amazing workshop about body love / acceptance. I was
very impressed, she brought amazing materials and was so organized and
prepared. Arwyn was full of energy and fun, which was nice when considering a
topic that can be difficult or triggering for some people. We talked about our
relationship with our bodies, with food, with other women. One thing she said that
still resonates with me is that I can see a beautiful or sexy or smart or
insert adjective here and I can say, “She is beautiful, and that is not a
threat to me.” I also found the activity about our relationship with food to be
insightful and helpful. There was much more to be taken away from this two hour
workshop, if you ever have a chance to attend it with Arwyn of Holding Space
Massage, I recommend it!</div>

Our last speaker of the day was Veronica. Can I just again
yell out a “THANK YOU!” to the woman who started this amazing 365 challenge?
Thank you, thank you, thank you. It was surreal to spend the weekend with her
and get to hear her speak about this project and her experiences with it the
last year (+). I kinda felt like I was meeting a celebrity!</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

After that full day of education and female community, we
had a bit of a break to relax and freshen up. We decided on Deschutes for
dinner, a downtown brewery, partly chosen due to its nearness to Powell’s City
of Books. ;) We have a lot of bookworms in this group! We were seated
surprisingly fast for a large group on a busy Saturday night. The food was
amazeballs, as was the beer, but of course the company was the best part.
Afterward we walked to Powell’s and gave ourselves a strict 45 minute shopping
time – which is laughable considering the size of Powell’s, but it was already late
and we had one more stop on our agenda! But 45 min was definitely better than
nothing, even if I didn’t leave the first floor. Just being surrounded by so
many books made me happy. I picked out a book for each of my boys.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Afterward, it was Voodoo Donut time. We learned the hard way
that there are TWO Voodoo locations within a mile of each other (wtf, Voodoo?)
and half of us went to one and half to the other, oops! The line was out the
door but it moved quickly. The donuts were pretty darn yummy! If you like
spicy, I recommend the Mexican Hot Chocolate cake donut.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Back at the hotel we munched donuts and chatted in a lounge
area until, I don’t know.. way too late again. ;)</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Sunday morning, the cofounder and director of Bitch
Magazine, Andi, came to speak. This lady is pretty amazing, as is the zine! We
learned about the history and mission of the magazine, as well as the
challenges of running a feminist media outlet. Andi brought copies of some of
the first editions of the zine as well as more recent copies, and gave us so
much food for thought on how most media depicts women and how Bitch goes
against that main stream. Andi is truly inspirational and I loved sitting in
discussion with her.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The last agenda item was a simple sit down discussion for
the organizers to gather feedback. I know how I thought the weekend went but I
wanted every else’s perspective as we headed into planning the conference in
the Midwest this fall. We had really useful discussion and several sisters had
some fantastic ideas about workshops and speakers for us to try to incorporate
in the next one. I am so grateful for every single attendee – your support,
your attendance, and your feedback at the end of the conference. It was a dream
come true to meet many of you and to be reunited with some friends I don’t get
to see often.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Hotel check out time was noon and I had one more thing to
do, not conference related: go check out Sarah’s house and chickens! She,
Megan, and I stopped at Foodlandia (a bunch of awesome food trucks) to grab
lunch and took it to Sarah’s house. I got to see her girls again, say hi to her
husband, and you guys. I GOT TO HOLD TWO OF HER CHICKENS. And Megan and I
collected eggs!!! Megan got to take some home; Sarah thought I could probably
sneak some onto the plane but I wasn’t feeling that adventurous. ;) Then, Sarah
dropped me at the airport and I was homeward bound. Exhausted but also
incredibly happy and fulfilled and inspired. <3</div>

One more giant shout out to everyone who helped us put this together, whether you donated auction items or bid on auction items or donated money or helped to plan or all of the above! Now let's do it all over again but even better in Columbus, OH this November!<br />

This week's theme is body love. What is your favorite part of your body? How do you show yourself love despite flaws you see in the mirror?
